COSA FARE E VEDERE A BRATISLAVA

La capitale della Slovacchia è la città dell'Europa dell'Est che meno mi ha colpito. Non venite qui sperando di ritrovare le atmosfere di Budapest, Cracovia, Bucarest o Varsavia: rimarrete delusi!

Io ci sono stata diversi giorni durante un bellissimo tour tra Budapest, Vienna e, appunto, Bratislava, di cui vi parlerò a breve.

The capital of Slovakia is the Eastern European city that I liked less. Do not come here hoping to find the atmosphere of Budapest, Krakow, Warsaw and Bucharest, Bratislava is really different!
I have been there several days during a beautiful tour of Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava, soon on the blog.

La piccola città slovacca, seppur non bella, ha, però, il grande vantaggio di trovarsi vicinissima a molte città stupende(dista appena un'ora di treno da Vienna), quindi può essere un punto di partenza o di arrivo da tenere in considerazione per viaggi con diverse mete; inoltre, l'aeroporto cittadino è servito da alcune compagnie low cost(in primis la Ryan-air) che hanno prezzi vantaggiosissimi per i voli da e per l'Italia.

Sulla città in sé, c'è veramente poco da dire: il centro storico(“starè mesto”,cioè città vecchia) è molto raccolto, tenuto con una sufficiente cura.

The small Slovak town, though is not beautiful, has the great advantage of being close to many beautiful cities (just an hour by train from Vienna), so it can be a point of departure or arrival from which you can reach other places; In addition, the city's airport is served by several low cost airlines (especially the Ryan-air) that have very favorable prices for flights to and from Europe.
About the city, there is not much to say: the old town ("Stare Mesto", that is the old town) is very collected, maintained with sufficient care.

Sulla strada principale ci sono alcuni bei palazzi antichi ben conservati, la piazza maggiormente degna di nota è senza dubbio Hlavne Namestie, dove troverete caratteristici mercatini e bancarelle di souvenir: carina.

Delle quattro porte che un tempo garantivano l'accesso alla città, oggi ne rimane solo una, la Porta di San Michele, in pieno centro storico, potete anche salirci per dare un'occhiata al panorama: non proprio un'esperienza fondamentale.

A piazza Hviezdoslav, invece, trascorrerete rilassanti pomeriggi, ammirando la bella facciata del Teatro Nazionale o prendendo parte a una partita sulla gigantesca scacchiera qui installata.

On the main street there are some beautiful old buildings well preserved, the most notable square is undoubtedly Hlavne Namestie, where you will find street markets and souvenir stands: pretty.
Of the four gates that once guaranteed the access to the city, today there is only one, the St. Michael's Gate, in the city center (you can also go to the top to look at the view: not just a fundamental experience). 
At Hviezdoslav square, however, you can spend relaxing afternoons, admiring the beautiful facade of the National Theatre or taking part in a game on the giant chessboard installed here.

Concedete un paio di ore anche alla visita dal Castello. Domina dall'alto la città, visibile da ogni punto, e lo raggiungerete con una passeggiata di circa mezz'ora. L'ingresso costa pochi euro, non che ci sia molto da vedere. E' stato da poco ristrutturato e ha subito molteplici incendi, quindi sono pochissime le tracce delle antiche sembianze.

Se proprio non potete farne a meno, ci sono, inoltre, un paio di chiese che possono meritare una breve capatina: la cattedrale di San Martino, la più grande della città, e la chiesa blu, con esterni dall'inusuale colore.

Spend a couple of hours even to visit the Castle. It dominates the city and is visible from every point. It can be reached by walking for half an hour. The ticket costs a few Euros, but there isn't  much to see. It was recently renovated and has undergone many fires, so there are very few traces of the old form.
Then, there are also a couple of churches that may deserve a brief detour: the Cathedral of Saint Martin, the largest city, and the Blue Church, with the unusual exterior color.

Ma sono sicuramente le tante statue in bronzo disseminate lungo le strade e le piazze del centro, i ricordi che con più nostalgia conserverete dentro di voi. Ritraggono personaggi strampalati e simpatici, e vi divertirete a posare in loro compagnia: incontrerete Cumil il guardone, che spia il passeggio dall'apertura di un tombino; il barone di Munchausen, sparato in aria su una palla di cannone; l'indiscreto Paparazzo, e tanti altri: giocate a cercarli nei posti più inaspettati!

But the nostalgic memories, that you'll keep in you, are surely the many bronze statues scattered along the streets and squares of the city center. They portray crazy and funny characters, and you'll have to pose with them:  you'll meet Cumil, spying on the promenade by the opening of a manhole; Baron Munchausen, fired into the air on a cannonball; the Paparazzi, and many others!

Sul Ponte Nuovo, infine, c'è la mega-installazione a forma di ufo che non potrete non notare: è forse la costruzione più alta dell'intera città. Se vi va, saliteci(c'è da pagare un ticket non proprio economico, almeno rispetto agli standard del tenore di vita slovacco) e prendete un drink o mangiate nel ristorante ospitato nell'astronave, dal quale potrete godere del panorama sottostante.

Come già detto, il centro storico è molto piccolo, vi basterà una sola giornata per vedere tutti i monumenti e le attrazioni principali(se avete più giorni da dedicare alla visita, per non annoiarvi, vi consiglio di provare anche il giro turistico nella caratteristiche macchinone rosse che scorrazzano nel centro). Tenete conto, però, che, una volta usciti dal centro, la modesta cura che avete osservato per le strade sarà presto dimenticata: la periferia(ma in realtà basta uscire di poche centinaia di metri dal centro storico) è veramente deprimente, si respira aria di forte disagio e terribile povertà, tutto è abbandonato e cadente: molto triste!

On the New Bridge, finally, there is the mega-installation-shaped UFO that you can not miss: it is perhaps the tallest building in the entire city. If you like, get on it (you have to pay a ticket is not exactly cheap, at least by the Slovak standards) and have a drink or dine in the restaurant housed in the ship, from which you can enjoy the panorama.
As already mentioned, the old town is very small, you need just one day to see all the sights and major attractions. Keep in mind, though, that once you'll get out from the old center, the city is not really nice: the periphery is really depressing, there is an air of great distress and dire poverty, everything is abandoned and broken: so sad!

Anche il cibo, nei tanti ristorantini e locali, non è proprio il massimo: molto dozzinale, pesante e, seppur economico, per niente consigliato.

Insomma, vale la pena passare di qui solo se di passaggio, un paio di giorni non vi annoieranno ma restare di più non è consigliabile.

Approfittate della capitale slovacca per programmare avventure di più ampio respiro, tenendola presente per qualche giorno all'insegna del relax.

Even the food in the many restaurants and clubs is not exactly good: very cheap, heavy and, although cheap, not recommended.
In short, a few days will not be bored, but more time is not advisable.
Take advantage of the Slovak capital to plan adventures elsewhere!
